Gitaroo Man: One of my faves

It's kind of a slow news day, so I thought I'd drop some knowledge about one of my favorite games from this generation, Gitaroo Man. Gitaroo Man is a rhythm game based around teenage boy U-1 and his gitaroo. A gitaroo is a mystical guitar used for good. The music in a rhythm game is vital to the success, and while some will find the music here irritating, I love it. The same can be said for the visuals in this game. The graphic style is Japanese to the end. The look and feel is as quirky as it gets. All that aside, what is really compelling about this game is the control scheme. Playing with U-1's gitaroo, you can actually use the analog stick to bend notes. In my opinion that is a pretty innovative gameplay idea and certainly adds depth to the somewhat lacking rhythm genre. The downfall of Gitaroo Man is the ridiculous difficulty. You will be retrying all the levels, no doubt about it. Regardless, I highly recommend Gitaroo Man to all rhythm game fans. The gameplay alone should be enough to keep you coming back for more.

Candid thoughts from Katamari creator

Linked here is an article where the creator of Katamari Damacy speaks very candidly about the upcoming Katamari sequel and his feelings about the state of the game industry. I'll save the summary for the article itself, but I absolutely love what he had to say. More designers need to stand-up and realize that gamers won't pay for the same crap forever. We crave innovative and original titles. Actually, it's not just the designers but also the publishers who greenlight most of this crap. Give indie games a chance instead of Dynasty Warriors 23. I just know every designer out there has an original idea or three that just needs support. I know they won't all be the next Katamari Damacy, but you won't find out unless you take a chance. I could go on forever, but I'll save it for another day.

Weenie Games

Ever since the release of Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox there has been a swirling debate about whether games have gotten progressively easier since the golden days of Atari, nes, and sega. I came across an excellent article on this at tomshardware.com today and it really got me thinking about this. This generation of gamers are definitely spoiled by the idea of game saves and checkpoints. This is proven by the fact that when we do get a classic game as an unlockable or as part of a collection we now have the option to save. I'm just as bad about this as the next guy because I threw, broke, and exploded many controllers in my day, so I'm gonna save dammit. Frankly, I NEED it to get through many games. But ya know what, that just proves to me that I too have gotten caught up in this generations lack of difficulty. Just go ahead and go back and play some old faves from the nes or genesis. Good luck. You'll see how much satisfaction you get from beating just one level, let alone the entire game. I remember when I finally finished the original Legend of Zelda after like 2 years of frustration, I was so excited I told every person I talked to. Now look, I'm not saying let's up the difficulty and games this generation are too easy, I'm just purely saying I agree games have gotten easier and that saves and checkpoints have spoiled the once cancerous phrase "game over."

Rumors are all around the internet saying PS3 games will cost around 70 bucks. This should be no surprise seeing how much Xbox 360 costs. Sony is basically saying we know our system will be in high demand so let's milk these gamers, and just like I said about the 360, it sucks. Mainly because I can't do anything but pay these high prices. Of course, this is only a rumor so maybe the money gods will shine upon us and not raise software prices.

The linked article here proclaims that the gaming era from 1983-1993 is our "greatest game generation." As much as I loved the NES, SNES, and the Genesis, I think it is a bit premature to call any generation of games the greatest. The way the industry is going we have a lot of gaming left. I'd put my money on the fact that the greatest generation of games is yet to come.

I am so sick and tired of Jack Thompson and Hilary Clinton putting their nose in the game industry. I understand that "Hot Coffee" is a bit inappropriate, but I mean c'mon they're fully clothed. Not only that, you have to enter codes and hack the pc version to see it. Get over it. And yeah I will acknowledge that San Andreas along with tons of other games are really violent and shouldn't be played by young kids, but that's what ratings are for. Maybe if the parents in this country actually payed attention to their kids, 10 year olds wouldn't be playing San Andreas or any other M rated game. The ESRB does a great job, it's the parents that buy anything and everything for their kids without looking at it that are the problem.

It was announced today that the Xbox 360 would start at a base price of $299. There will also be a $399 deluxe version with a hard drive, wireless controllers, and an ethernet cable. Wow. Someone should be fired for this decision to split the demographic from the get-go. Let's forget the ridiculously high price for a minute, and just think about the two different versions. The $299 is only the console and one controller. 300 bucks for one damn controller! It will reportedly cost around $50 for another controller. Retarded. Ok but then there's the $399 version. No details about the importance of the additional hard drive have been revealed. So we don't know the point of paying the extra hundred bucks yet. The worst thing of all is that you have to pay $400 and you don't even get wi-fi with the xbox 360. Just make you feel worse about it, they laugh in your face by giving you an ethernet cable. Jerks. Actually, the worst part is that games like Gears of War look so damn good that I'll probably still pay the $400 anyway. I'm such a tool.

I am so stoked about Nintendogs coming out in a few weeks. I recently played the demo and I was blown away. The touch-screen controls are so intuitive. It's been two days since I played and I still can't believe how well it worked. It was like petting a real dog. The demo is only five minutes long but those were the best five minutes of the month so far. Yeah I'm a nerd, so what.

For the past few days, I've been hearing about this National Lampoon satire about Adult Swim. I just watched it and it's totally ridiculous and completely unfunny. It's sad really how far National Lampoon will go in an attempt to be funny. Dropping F bombs doesn't mean funny, and neither does taking cheap shots at a network they're jealous of. I'm sure Adult Swim doesn't even care, I mean what is the last successful thing Lampoon has done? Vacation? They should've quit a long time ago. And besides they should support a network like Adult Swim that essentially carries the same values Lampoon used to back in the golden days. Lampoon should just pass the torch and give up now before they embarass themselves even more.

At work tonight I realized I hadn't mentioned anything about how I saw Bad News Bears a few days ago. Basically, it's hilarious. It's not a movie for everyone, it's a tad offensive. It might have a pg-13 rating, but be warned the language is very strong. If you don't mind that then I highly recommend it. I guess I'm a bit partial because I loved the original and this one stayed extremely close. They only changed small details. Point is this movie will make you puke your popcorn. Go now.

Alright, by now most of you have probably seen the "Super Bowl is Gay" video by Andy Milonakis, if not click the link. It classifies as hilarious to me. What's even funnier to me is that the kid in the video, Andy, has his own show on MTV now, mostly because of this video. What a great country this is. You record a video trashing one of the most beloved events in our culture and they pay you to do it some more on cable tv. What's strange about Andy's show is that most of it isn't laugh out loud funny but I can't stop watching it. You'll sit there and actually say, "That's funny" but seldom fall on the floor laughing. Anyway, the whole point of this is to wonder why I still watch the show? Is it because I expect the next segment to be hilarious, and I don't want to miss it? Is it his terrible voice-overs? Maybe his over-the-top facial expressions? I guess it's a combination of all of that along with the fact that he realizes it, and frequently makes fun of himself for the crappy production and other things. Glad I got that figured out.

Naturally, the upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie starring Johnny Depp is getting a lot of attention. But for the last few days, it's been for all the wrong reasons. A huge number of movie critics are linking Depp's performance to Micheal Jackson. He has all the characteristics of the faded pop star. Depp obviously denies that he modeled his Willly Wonka after Mr. Jackson. I, for one, think this is a hilarious controversy, and exactly why I love this blog. Takeru Kobayashi continued to depend his hot dog eating title yesterday by eating 49 hot dogs in 12 minutres. Apparently this number was disappointing to him because one year ago he ate 53.5 hot dogs and hoped to break that record this year. He beat the second place finisher by 12 weiners. Reading this story shocked me to say the least. I had to read it twice just to make sure my imagination hadn't gone haywire. I had no idea there was actually a hot dog eating contest, let alone a five-time champion. What is this world coming to?

He cites that the price drop in software and other necessities for a new business have created many more successful businesses than we are used to seeing. While it may be true that starting a business costs roughly 10 times less than year it did years ago, I would argue that this only makes it harder for entrepreneurs. Harry Potter vs. July 4th

While spending time with my family today doing usual 4th of July weekend stuff, I couldn't help but think about Harry Potter. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'll be waiting in line for the midnight release. Nerd alert, I guess. But, I couldn't help but think that for thousands and thousands or Americans, such as myself, the pre-potter hysteria is severly over shadowing our nation's birthday. It's just plain hilarious to me that a fictional character created outside of the country just may be more exciting than fireworks this weekend.

Previously Death By Stereo has been flying under the mainstream radar due to their melting pot sound. And as much as it pains me to say it, Death for Life is clearly aimed more at major labels and mass exposure than the previously released Day of the Death and Into the Valley of Death. The band spent much more time making this album, and long-time fans will appreciate this. Tracks such as “This Curse of Days” and “W.W.J.D?” are exactly what metal-punk fan boys are looking for from this release. Where the album seems to be aimed to a more mass audience is on the track “Forever and A Day” which is a Staind and/or Creed influenced power ballad that will obviously become a single and shock longtime fans. The band also clearly made a conscious effort to become heavier on tracks such as “Don’t Piss on My Neck and Tell Me It’s Raining.” This album sends such mixed signals it’s hard to tell whether the band has matured or not. After the initial listen and a look back to Into the Valley the band hasn’t stepped forward or back, they’re stuck in mud.

Feeble humans run and buy Destroy All Humans from THQ! This game is a must play, whether you rent or buy it. This game is set in the 1950s and designed to be a spoof of all the B-Movies from that era. The twist is that you play the aliens hellbent on taking over the planet. The game should be applauded just for the original concept. But, that's not the only reason. The story is so quirky and funny, you have to play it twice to catch all the jokes. The voiceovers are excellent and fit very well with the setting. The alien gadgets are so much fun to use. Just imagine lifting an army vehicle with your mind and throwing it into a crowd of people. Then, finishing them off with an anal probe. Of course, not all weapons are immediately available and must be unlocked. The game using an open-ended world much like Grand Theft Auto, but this game is hardly as wide-open. You are told which mission to do and in what order. However, there are tons of side missions you can attempt in between story missions. The good thing is that most missions are open-ended so that you can decide how to complete them. Use your disintegrator or ionizer, it's up to you. The problem is that the story itself isn't too long, only about 10 hours or so. But, as I mentioned earlier, there are tons of side missions and above all the story is entertaining enough to play it more than once. The problem I do have with the game is that there is no multiplayer. In an era where multiplayer is vital, those games without cannot reach their full potential. Thus is the fate of Destroy All Humans. An entertaining game that's a bit short, nothing more, nothing less. So go ahead, rip the human race a new one.

Common - Be, the review

Kanye West fans will love his latest production, Common’s Be. This album is more about Kanye than it is about Common. That being said this is Common’s best effort to date. The Chicago MC had yet to fully realize his vision on his five previous albums. A big shot producer, the likes of Mr. West is exactly what Common needed to get his message across. This album is proof of that. Memorable hooks and samples from old soul records propel songs such as “Faithful” to the level of instant summer classic. There are also a few memorable guest appearances from the likes of John Mayer on “Go” and John Legend on “They Say.” In a bit of a questionable move the live version of “The Food” is taken directly from Chappelle’s Show, bad sound quality and all. The only real problem with this album, is that Common is an afterthought on his own album. While all the tracks have hit written all over them and Common excels as an MC, all this does is satisfy Kanye fans until his follow-up album comes out later this summer.

Box Office Lacks Passion

In the Dallas Morning News today there is a huge deal being made about the box office slump I talked about earlier this week. In reality, it is a big deal, but to me it really isn't. What it boils down to is last year "The Passion" came out. That movie seemed like it would never leave the theaters. I think it was still in theaters when the dvd came out. Also, the movies this season have been good at best. Maybe if Hollyweird would stop rehashing the same crap, and come up with original ideas people would be willing to pay. Think about it the best movies thus far were Batman Begins and War of the World. Both remakes. Not to say, I didn't like them, because I did. A lot. But c,mon. I know, I know there were sequels and remakes last year. I freaking know that. This is an epidemic that has been sweeping across Hollyweird for years. This year with the rise of dvd sales and ticket prices, people just got sick of wading in crap. That's it, bottom line.

IPod Photo Merge

Apple recently announced they are merging the IPod Photo with the regular IPod, so that all IPods will have a color screen and photo capabilities. There will also be a new menu for podcasting allowing for easier access. In light of all this, frankly I'm pissed. Less then 6 months ago, I shelled out $400 on a 40 gb with a black and white screen, and now I'll be behind the times. Balls.

XXX: State of the One-Liner

Another knot in my recent string of dollar movies continued tonight when I finally saw XXX: State of the Union. I went into it expecting action, explosions-a-plenty, one-liners, lack of story, bad-ass Samuel L, and straight outta compton Ice Cube. And that is exactly what I got. You have to expect corny lines and not the best acting, but you also have to sacrifice something for so much destruction. Here's the deal, this movie was entertaining. I would watch it again. The high-paced chases and fights were enough for me to shell out admission. If you can get past what this movie lacks, you're in for a freaked out hell ride.

Max Payne goes to the movies, viewers hide

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox has purchased the rights to the popular videogame franchise Max Payne. Videogames turned into movies have a bad reputation. Reportedly, Avril Lavigne is engaged to the lead-singer of Sum 41. The news comes after a report that the two have been living together in L.A. High-school skater boys around the globe are surely reeling from the news. I'm not sure what this says about the groom-to-be. Is he robbing the cradle? Perhaps. Ms. socks-for-sleeves is 5 years younger and only 20. I guess whatever floats your boat eh, Canada?

Box office in huge slump

Even the recent release of "Batman Begins" couldn't bring the U.S. box office out of it's biggest slump since 1985 when revenue declined for 17 weeks. This past weekend marked the 18th straight week there has been a decline. If the slump continues, Hollywood is on course for a third straight year of declining admissions and its lowest ticket sales since the mid-1990s. Who'd a thunk that blockbusters such as "Herbie Fully Loaded" and "Bewitched" wouldn't reach astronomical sales? The only hope is that "War of the World", which opens this week, reaches the $180 million mark that "Spiderman 2" reached in it's first six days this time last year. With Spielberg and Tom Cruise one can only hope for pure gold, but as history tells us, it could be pure crap. Brace yourselves for week 19 America. Courtesy of Yahoo.

Still waiting for Batman to begin

I recently spent some time with the new "Batman Begins" videogame and let me say I didn't spend much time. From the start I was impressed with the production value of the game, and immediately floored by the voice acting. All of the actors from the movie have returned to the game which adds much needed credibility. This where the game goes wrong. The controls leave much to be desired. The problem is that the game holds your hand all the way through and you're essentially pushing A to do everything. A command pops up everytime you can attack and finish your enemy. A command with crosshairs pops up everytime you enter a new room. There's absolutely no guess work. And about the time you think the game is about to get interesting, it's over. The game literally takes as long as watching the movie. I kept thinking, "Okay when the tutorial ends, this game will kick ass." Not so much. If you're in the mood, for a three hour tutorial with single button combat, this game is for you. As for the rest of us, steer clear and just go watch the movie again.

Logo set to debut Thursday, June 30th

Logo, the new network for gays and lesbians, debuts Thursday, June 30th. Logo will initially be seen in about 10 million homes. Brian Graden, the genius behind "Jackass" and "Pimp My Ride" will be president of the new network. Of the new network, Graden says "...The standards of Logo will be that of a general entertainment network. The assumption that I would have to push certain standards to tell my story instead of yours I don't get, because they're all human stories. Nintendo Revolution Poster Leak

There is a poster circulating that supposedly announces Nintendo's Revolution to be released in March 2006. The deal is that the poster has not been confirmed by Nintendo, still being tight-lipped about it. Most Indutry experts believe it will be released in the fourth quarter of 2006, not as early as March. This early launch would be a shock to Sony, Microsoft and the entire Industry. If this does turn out to be the real deal, I for one will need a new pair of pants. We'll just have to wait and see.

Emile's "don't yawn game" has gotten a lot of attention and I don't get it. Watching it doesn't make me want to yawn at all. It's the yawning noise that does it, not seeing it. Maybe I'm a yokel and need a good slap, but this game has no effect on me. Try it out for yourself and see if you can handle it.

Earlier tonight I finally saw Kingdom of Heaven at the dollar theatre. Was it worth the $1.50? Hardly. Just Barely. Amidst the blood and gore lies a movie with no point. I don't want to spoil any part of the movie but the end leaves much to be desired. But it was way before that I was disengaged with the dialogue and storytelling. Right from the start I had a hard time following who was who and where the story was going. In the end, I spent the whole movie wondering what was going on. That's not to say that the movie wasn't made well. It was. Ridley Scott shows he's still got it. The fight scenes were a visual bloodbath and I loved them, even if I didn't understand them. All in all, I'm glad it only cost $1.50 or I would have been pretty hopping mad.

P.S. Why the hell do movies cost $1.50 at a dollar theatre anyway?

My calendar says it's Friday so I thought I'd talk about the sorry selection of movies that come out today. Well, we've got Bewitched, Herbie Fully Loaded and Land of the Dead. George Romero is the king of zombies, so of the three that movie looks most promising. But none of them look good enough for me to open my wallet. Thanks but no thanks hollyweird, I'll stay home tonight.
